The Labor Day weekend kept firefighters in Central Oregon busy as they chased down dozens of fire and smoke calls.

KTVZ reports that most of the calls resulted from unattended campfires, fireworks and discarded cigarettes in dry conditions.

Craig Letz with the Central Oregon Fire Management Service says that changing the public’s mentality is a big challenge.

While fire season used to end in August, Letz says the new normal is for the season to continue through September or October.
