The National Weather Service Tuesday evening issued an ice storm warning for the North Oregon and South Washington Cascades and the Western Columbia River Gorge. The warning is in effect until 9 a.m. Wednesday.
Forecasters predict ice accumulations between 1/4 to 1/2 an inch in the affected areas through Wednesday. The report warns that ice could make travel in the areas "treacherous or impossible," and warns that residents should avoid unnecessary travel.
While forecasters don't expect any ice or snow accumulation for the Portland metro area, they do say roads on Portland's west side — where it's colder — could be slick.
"Over on the Hood River Valley area we're thinking there could be some pretty good ice accumulations," said Laurel McCoy, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Portland. "There will be some cooler air trapped in over there, which will help create a freezing rain kind of situation."
McCoy said temperatures in the Portland area should remain above freezing.
