Officials are breaking ground Thursday on a new veterans' home in Lebanon.

Project Manager John Osbourne, with the Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs,  describes the $30 million project as innovative.

"This particular veterans' home is designed under the "small house" model. It will be 154 beds. There will be 14 residents in each small house, and three houses to a neighborhood."

The property will include a community center, rehab facilities, a large meeting area, a library, a chapel, and more.

The land was donated by Linn County. It's close to a teaching hospital, and administrators hope to create a pipeline of medical professionals to help staff the home.

It's scheduled to open in late 2014, serving veterans from throughout the Willamette Valley.
