Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden is asking the federal government for assistance to help the state fight wildfires in southeast Oregon.

In a letter to President Barack Obama, Wyden said the state doesn¹t have enough crews and equipment because firefighters were sent elsewhere to deal with other fires in the country.

The Long Draw Fire is now the largest fire in the nation, at over 800 square miles. A second fire, the Miller Homestead Fire, has charred about 250 square miles.

Rep. Greg Walden visited eastern Oregon on Friday. During a stop in Ontario, officials with the Bureau of Land Management told Walden and residents that conditions are grim, and they should be prepared for more wildfires.
