Portland-based New Seasons Market has been recognized as the first grocery store in the world to earn B Corp certification. It’s one of 775 certified B Corps worldwide.

The certification underscores company’s status as a benefit corporation – or a company that aims for the triple bottom line of economic, environmental and social sustainability.

The non-profit certifier B Lab gave New Seasons an overall score of 121 out of 200 possible certification points, noting that the company shares 20 percent of its after-tax profits with its staff and donates 10 percent of those profit to the community. Earlier this year, New Seasons was recognized as a Zero Waste company for diverting 92 percent of its waste from landfills.

“They offer lifestyle scheduling, giving staff consistent hours and schedules, allowing them to live their lives, have a life, and make New Seasons Market a part of that life,” the B Lab reports.

Wendy Collie, president and CEO of New Seasons, said in a news release that the verification and recognition of B Corp certification is valuable.

“B Corp is unique in that it recognizes truly sustainable companies; those that have a higher purpose for business beyond just profit,” she said. “We see achieving B Corp certification as an incredible recognition of our commitment to being a socially, environmentally and financially responsible company.”
