Officials confirmed Reynolds High School freshman Emilio Hoffman, 14, was shot and killed by a lone gunman Tuesday morning. Classmates and strangers shared their condolences on Twitter after learning the news, using the hashtag #RIPEmilioHoffman.

“This is not supposed to happen at school or to any child, but we will get through this together,” Troutdale Police Chief Scott Anderson said at an afternoon press conference.

“This was tragic event,” Reynolds School District Superintendent Linda Florence said. “It feels so personal.”

Friends tweeted that they will remember Hoffman as a close, dear friend and a good person. Some reflected on the harsh reality that the victim won’t experience staple high school activities, like prom or graduation, saying Hoffman was gone too soon.  He was a freshman at Reynolds high and a soccer player on the school’s junior varsity team last fall.

A vigil will be held at the Greater Portland Baptist Church at 7:30 p.m. and there will a candle lighting for Hoffman at Walt Morey Middle School at 9 p.m.
