Gov. John Kitzhaber and Chief Education Officer Rudy Crew were in Tigard to welcome members of the Class of 2025 to their first day of school.

The governor has asked Crew to transform the state’s education system so that every student in the Class of 2025 graduates from high school, and 80 percent of them go on to attain a two- or four-year college degree.

Students facing those heavy expectations are just starting kindergarten.

Oregon’s current graduation rate is less than 70 percent, so getting to 100 percent might be an impossible task.

But Kitzhaber and Crew said Wednesday it can be achieved through innovation and increased education spending.
