Well, we tried. OPB, PBS, the Washington Times and the Oregon Republican Party have been working for months on a debate with the Republican presidential candidates next Monday. But the plug was pulled after the top candidates, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum, declined to appear.

Meanwhile, in Washington D.C., the Oregon Senate delegation was able to insert a one-year extension of federal timber payments, if at a much reduced amount, into a federal budget bill.

And Congressman Jay Inslee, from the Seattle suburbs, has announced that he will resign from the U.S. House to campaign full-time for governor.

Friday mornings, we talk politics with Bill and Jeff. Bill Lunch is OPB’s Political Analyst; he’s at the OSU Media Center. Jeff Mapes is the senior political reporter and blogger for The Oregonian.
