A new poll, commissioned by OPB and Fox 12, finds that 44 percent of registered voters in Portland are likely to choose Charlie Hales for mayor next week.
The poll found Jefferson Smith would garner 25 percent of the votes.
Pollster Tim Hibbitts of DHM Research believes the numbers show Hales is going to win. But, he says, respondents were also asked if they would write in the name of another person, and 12 percent said yes.
He explained, "I think this is directly a reflection of the problems that some voters in Portland are having with both of these candidates."
The poll didn't ask who people would write in.
Nineteen percent of respondents said they were undecided.
The poll was conducted among 400 registered voters in Portland on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It has a margin of error of plus-or-minus 4.9 percent.
