Portland-based, Consumer Cellular says it will expand into Central Oregon this summer.  The telecommunications company says it intends to lease T-Mobile’s Redmond call center that had been slated to close.

T-Mobile announced in March it would shutter that facility and layoff its more than 350 workers.

In a press release, Consumer Cellular said it plans eventually to employ nearly twice that number.

Redmond Mayor George Endicott says in the short term, the company plans to start slow, hiring only about 50 to 75 employees.  Even so, he says the announcement should be welcome news.

“To have a company come in and replace them and be able to hire a lot of those folks right back that already have the training and experiences is good for the companies.  It’s good for the communities.  It’s good for the area.”

Consumer Cellular plans to open its call center the 1st of August.  That’s just a few weeks after T-mobile plans shut down its operations at the 77,000 square foot facility.
