The Medford School District hired 24 more substitute teachers over the holiday weekend and shifted support staff as a teachers strike enters its second week.
Superintendent Phil Long says the district has about 165 substitutes this week and hopes to stabilize enrollment. Enrollment dropped to 44 percent on Friday with students reporting large class sizes.
About 20 of the 600 unionized teachers crossed picket lines last week to return to work. Medford has Oregon’s eighth-largest district with 13,500 students.
Negotiations between the district and the Medford Education Association resume Wednesday.
