Portland teachers and administrators resumed talks Monday in hopes of averting a strike scheduled for Thursday.

It would be the first ever teachers’ strike in Oregon’s largest school district.

Portland Public Schools submitted a new offer in talks Sunday. Proposal details haven’t been made public. The Portland Association of Teachers have said only that their bargaining team is reviewing it.

The PAT’s last offer scaled back salary increases, among other concessions. Sticking points that remain include early retirement incentives, and how to rein in teacher workloads and class sizes.

Schools have been preparing for the possibility of a strike including changing the scheduled “late start” day Wednesday to an “early release” day instead.
