Each week the Monday Mix showcases three brand new songs from the opbmusic broadcast. This week we feature a song from a sophomore release, an established supergroup, and a solo project from one of rock music’s biggest names.
Big Thief - Mythological Beauty
Last year, Brooklyn-based indie band, Big Thief, released their debut album Masterpiece, a collection of emotive, intricate, reflective songs that swiftly drew critical acclaim. This first track off their sophomore LP, Capacity, is an autobiographical glimpse into lead singer/guitarist Adrianne Lenker’s near death experience as a child with a railroad spike and her cyclical relationship with her young mother. Over looping guitars that whir around a soft bass line, Lenker’s vocals move from a melancholic tenderness to an assertive strength that is truly captivating. Capacity is out on June 9th and Big Thief is coming to Pickathon on Friday, August 4th.
Broken Social Scene - Halfway Home
“Halway Home” is the first song released from Canadian supergroup Broken Social Scene’s still-untitled forthcoming release (they’ve been hinting at it for nearly a year). Justin Peroff drives the track forward with intense energy on the drums and the voice of Leslie Feist weaves in and out amidst ringing electric guitar, horns, and group vocals. If this song tells us anything about their new material, fans will not be disappointed.
Dan Auerbach - Shine On Me
The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach’s “Shine On Me” is the perfect song to add to your Summer Road Trip playlist. Featuring guitar contributions from Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits, the track is undeniably fun, lighthearted, and instantly has you humming along to the chorus. Check out the goofy, animated music video and keep an eye out for Auerbach’s second solo album, Waiting On A Song, out on June 2nd.
