Each week the Monday Mix showcases three brand new songs from the opbmusic broadcast. This week we feature tracks from Northern English rockers, an evolving artist from Cameroon who’s settled in New York, and a new indie rock supergroup.
Elbow - Firebrand & Angel
“Firebrand & Angel” is our latest pick from Elbow’s recently released album, Little Fictions. Lead singer Guy Garvey’s voice soars melodically over a piano backbone as the song methodically builds momentum with layers of texture. The track is almost meditative and pulls you deeper into the soundscape the longer you listen.
Vagabon - The Embers
“The Embers” is a track from Vagabon’s debut album, Infinite Worlds, which is out on February 24th. Born in Cameroon, songwriter and lead singer Lætitia Tamko moved to the US at age 13 and taught herself to play guitar in high school. After briefly putting her music on the backburner while she studied engineering, Tamko has emerged as a growing presence in the New York City music scene, sometimes sharing a stage with Epoch members, Frankie Cosmos and Told Slant. “The Embers” first appeared on Tamko’s EP, Persian Garden, as “Sharks” (which you can check out here). But in this new, amped-up version, Tamko pushes and pulls the sound from a raw, tender waiver in her vocals through crashing bursts of electric guitar, drums, and confidence.
BNQT - Restart
There’s a new indie supergroup to keep an eye out for, folks, and they have released their first song, “Restart”. The idea for BNQT, pronounced “banquet,” came together in 2015 drawing together the lead singers from Band of Horses, Franz Ferdinand, Grandaddy, Travis, and Midlake. This psychedelic, alt-rock track is your first taste of their upcoming album, Vol. I, out on April 28th.
