Each week the Monday Mix showcases three brand new songs debuting on the opbmusic broadcast. This week we feature the first releases from a couple of highly anticipated albums and an unexpected collaboration.
Father John Misty - Pure Comedy
Last week indie rocker Father John Misty shared a new song, “Pure Comedy,” and announced an upcoming album by the same name out on April 7th. The Elton John-esque piano ballad finds singer Josh Tillman in fine form and is equally sarcastic as it is earnest. The track is also accompanied by a partially animated music video and Pure Comedy: The Film, a short documentary on the making of the album.
Arcade Fire - I Give You Power feat. Mavis Staples
Arcade Fire teams up with gospel and soul legend Mavis Staples on “I Give You Power,” their first new material since 2013’s Reflektor. The song is — wait for it — incredibly powerful, with Mavis Staples’ voice adding a gritty punch to each line of the chorus. The track was released with a tweet from the band that reads “It’s never been more important that we stick together & take care of each other. Love, Mavis Staples and Arcade Fire.” The band also announced that all proceeds from the single release will benefit the ACLU. Arcade Fire have reportedly finished recording their upcoming album, due out later this year.
Asgeir - Unbound
“Unbound” is the first release from Icelandic musician Asgeir’s highly anticipated album Afterglow out on May 5th. Intimately layered and mellow, the track starts and stops, and pulsates forward with a bevy of electronic sounds. The lyrics, written by Asgeir’s brother, Stenini, are “about living in the now and not getting stuck on the past and what we can’t change.”
