opbmusic's Monday Mix: Kelli Schaefer, The Old 97's, Chicano Batman

Each week the Monday Mix showcases three brand new songs from the opbmusic broadcast. This week we feature a local Portland artist, an alt-country pioneer, and a group that recently played a studio session here at OPB.

Kelli Schaefer - Big Black Box

We were all floored after listening to this track from Portland musician Kelli Schaefer’s forthcoming album, No Identity (out on March 17th). “Big Black Box” begins with sparse chimes and a sense that Schaefer is whispering right next to your ear. As the track builds, electric guitar, strings, and layered backing vocals pull the listener into the song’s beautifully haunting arrangement. We can’t wait to hear more. Thankfully, Schaefer’s album release party is later this month.

The Old 97’s feat. Brandi Carlile - Good With God

“Good With God” comes from Graveyard Whistling, the latest effort from seminal Texas alt-country outfit Old 97’s. This song never drops in energy. Guest vocalist Brandi Carlile adds an ominous punch to the song’s rollicking wild west-inspired electric guitar. You can catch them live in Portland at the Wonder Ballroom with Ha Ha Tonka on March 22nd.

Chicano Batman - Freedom Is Free

Chicano Batman are a four piece group out of LA who specialize in Latin psych soul. “Freedom Is Free,” from their recently released album by the same name, blends surf guitar licks, a funky base line, and airy choral vocals to create the perfect laid-back springtime groove. But the song isn’t all fun and sun. According to their official bio, “Freedom Is Free” was written in response to an idiom that gained popularity during the Iraq War. Check out Chicano Batman’s recent opbmusic studio session and interview here.
