Brainstorm

Portland band Brainstorm‘s music has been described as experimental, math-y, a joyful and sometimes deafening mix of Afrobeat influences, stinging guitar, polyrhythms and, let’s not forget, tuba. The band began as a drums/guitar duo of Adam Baz and Patrick Phillips, and their energetic shows earned them a spot on the Willamette Week “Best New Band” list in 2011 — before they’d released their debut LP. That record, Heat Waves, comes out next month on Portland label Tender Loving Empire. They’re joined here by new bassist Tamara Barnes, for a set that includes their best-known song, “Flat Earth”, and songs from their October release. (See their NPR feature about “Flat Earth”.)

Brainstorm plays at Holocene tonight (Thursday) during Music Fest NW, opening for Tanlines.

You can also catch them Saturday at Mississippi Studios for PDX/Rx, our free party from 11am-4pm!
