The husband and wife creative tandem of Kevin and Anita Robinson produce new music as prolifically as anyone in the Portland music scene. On top of their dozen years of work as Viva Voce, they’ve played with the local folk-Americana super-group Blue Giant and produced AgesandAges’ debut record Alright You Restless in their home studio, Amore!Phonics.  The Future Will Destroy You, out this past summer on Vanguard, is Viva Voce’s sixth studio album. After performing as a quartet for their previous record, they’re back to their original two-piece form. The Future Will Destroy You also marks a dark thematic turn for the band with songs inspired by what they see as America’s gloomy present and future.

Viva Voce dropped by our studios to play songs from The Future Will Destroy You. We also chat with the band about working in their home studio, their songwriting process, and the dark themes on their new record.

Viva Voce plays the Crystal Ballroom this Thursday night as part of MusicFest NW.

Revisit our first session with the band, recorded in July of 2009.
