Latino Theater Makes Big Impact, Airs Oct. 29, 2009

OPB | Oct. 21, 2009 4:42 a.m. | Updated: Dec. 5, 2013 11:14 a.m.

Over 25 ago, Jose Gonzales and Danel Malan moved to Portland and wondered why there wasn’t much work for Latino and Latina actors. They took matters into their own hands and created a theater company that has blossomed into much. OREGON ART BEAT visits the Milagro Theater — Portland’s oldest Latino theater — presenting plays and developing educational outreach programs in both Spanish and English. Tune in to the stations of Oregon Public Broadcasting on Thursday, October 29 at 8pm.

See what quirky sculptures of people have in common with kitschy velvet paintings as ART BEAT exposes the double life of Jennifer Kenworth.

Hanz Araki plays and sings Celtic music beautifully. But another culture from the other side of the world also influences this award-winning musician.

ART BEAT repeats Sundays at 2am and 6pm. Video of the stories featured on ART BEAT can be viewed online immediately following the broadcast at opb.org/programs/artbeat.

About OREGON ART BEAT

The program airs Thursdays at 8pm and Sundays at 2am and 6pm. In the Mountain Time Zone of Eastern Oregon, the program airs at 9pm Thursdays and repeats at 7pm on Sundays. Funding for OREGON ART BEAT is provided in part by James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation and the Kinsman Foundation. More information is available online at opb.org/artbeat.
