Portland's Prettiest Voice, Airs Nov. 5, 2009

OPB | Oct. 26, 2009 6:03 a.m. | Updated: Dec. 5, 2013 11:14 a.m.

Some say she has the “prettiest” voice in Portland. Well-known jazz singer Rebecca Kilgore has entertained in Portland for a couple of decades — but many of her favorite old haunts are now gone. Find out how and why — years ago — this “singing secretary” made the leap from the office to the jazz scene when OREGON ART BEAT catches up with her at Jimmy Mak’s for the release of her new CD. Tune in to the stations of Oregon Public Broadcasting on Thursday, November 5 at 8pm.

Johanna Wright writes and illustrates children’s books. Sometimes she starts with a picture, sometimes with a story, but she ends up with a whimsical tale and matching illustrations. She also reads aloud in a preschool, to share her story with her audience.

Greg Wilbur’s hand-made vessels have such a humble elegance and purity of form that many people can’t tell what they’re made of. Learn how this Portland sculptor has mastered the art of raising, the ancient technique of hammering a flat piece of metal into something beautiful.

ART BEAT repeats Sundays at 2am and 6pm. Video of the stories featured on ART BEAT can be viewed online immediately following the broadcast at opb.org/programs/artbeat.
