Photographer Susan Seubert on ART BEAT, Airs Aug 23

OPB | Aug. 12, 2012 11 p.m. | Updated: Dec. 5, 2013 11:15 a.m.

If you read magazines, you have probably seen the work of Portland photographer Susan Seubert. But print ads are not the only trick Susan’s bag. She’s also an accomplished fine artist, translating her 21st-century social consciousness through a 19th-century photographic process to give her work power and resonance. Tune in to OREGON ART BEAT Thursday, August 23 at 8pm on OPB TV for a look at some for a look at some extraordinary photography in two extraordinarily different styles.

Not many people would have the patience to do what Jonnel Covault does. She is meticulous in the amount of detail she gets into her linocut blocks, but the work pays off in the beautiful prints that result. ART BEAT visits her studio for a look at how she does it.

It’s easy to see that singer/songwriter Beth Wood loves to share the joy of what she calls her “troubadour music.” This self-described “barefoot acoustic enthusiast” from Eugene started out as a pianist, but when she picked up a guitar, it was transformational. Playing the piano, she says, was about interpreting other people’s music — but playing the guitar led her to discovering her own music. She lets OREGON ART BEAT in on the stories behind a couple of her recent songs.
