OPB Journalists and Storytellers Receive Multiple SPJ Award Honors


 

Staff recognized for work in online media, radio and television

OPB was recently honored with two first place awards along with seven second and two third place awards in the 2015 Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Northwest Excellence in Journalism Contest.  

The annual contest honors the very best in journalism in SPJ’s Region 10, which includes Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana. Awards are given for all forms of media—print, online, radio and TV—and to media organizations ranging in size.  

OPB’s 2015 SPJ Awards include:  

Online Media:  

First Place – Daily Print and Online for Social Issues Reporting “Class of 2025” by Rob Manning, Amanda Peacher, Eve Epstein, Jason Bernert and Michael Clapp

First Place – Daily Print and Online for Environment and Science Reporting “Wild Horses in Crisis” by Vince Patton and Jason Berhert

Second Place – Daily Print and Online for Environment and Science Reporting “Investigating Forest Herbicide Drift” by Amelia Templeton and Tony Schick

Second Place – Daily Print and Online Social Issues Reporting “Inside the Box” by the EarthFix staff

Second Place – Daily Print and Online Investigative Reporting “Rail Workers Raise Doubts About Safety Culture As Oil Trains Roll On” by Tony Schick and Ashley Ahearn

Second Place – Daily Print and Online Business Reporting “Cannabis Country” by Amelia Templeton and John Rosman  

Radio  

Second Place – Radio Investigative Reporting “Rail Workers Raise Doubts About Safety Culture As Oil Trains Roll On” by Tony Schick and Ashley Ahearn

Third Place – Radio Investigative Reporting “Washington State GOP Donates $89K to Clark County Candidate” by Conrad Wilson, Tony Schick and Eve Epstein    

Television  

Second Place – Television General News ReportingRanchers Act to Protect Sage Grouse, Prevent Restrictions” by Vince Patton, Todd Sonflieth, Lisa Suinn Kallem and Michael Bendixen.

Second Place – Television Special Report/Documentary “Luther Cressman, Quest for First People” by Kami Horton, Lisa Suinn Kallem and Greg Bond

Third Place – Television Special Report/Documentary “State of Jefferson” by Kami Horton, Lisa Suinn Kallem and Greg Bond

In addition to these awards, OPB Digital Producer Lizzy Duffy received the SPJ “Rookie of the Year” award from the Oregon chapter of the SPJ.   SPJ Award winners were honored on Saturday, June 6 at a ceremony in Albany, Oregon.
