- Greg and Patti Young had the idea of starting a small band to help student musicians in the Coos Bay area develop their ability. To their surprise, the group has grown to 150 participants split among four bands. The all-volunteer, nonprofit program has been is open to anyone from 9 to 21.

- Hood River's International Museum of Carousel Art is full of antique hand-carved carousel horses and other animals. It also holds other carousel relics, like an old Wurlitzer machine that works like a player piano. The founders also restore entire carousels and put them back into operation across the country.
