- In 1948, young Oregonian news photographer Allan deLay was sent to the scene of the Vanport flood. The water was still rising. His photos were picked up by news organizations around the world. He went on to shoot many celebrities of the 50s and 60s. He's also a lifelong Boy Scout, an accomplished diver, and plays the musical saw.

- Mike Russo came to Oregon in the 1940s to teach art. He was a modernist, and his style was controversial. He taught generations of students at the Portland Museum Art School and continued to paint well into his 90's. His influence is still felt in the Portland art community.
