Rama The Painting Elephant

Oregon Art Beat features its first non-human artist: Rama, an Oregon Zoo elephant, paints! Overshadowed for years by his famous father, Packy, Rama is finally coming into his own as an emerging Oregon artist. Rama uses his trunk to wield a paintbrush. He also blows paint directly from his trunk to make abstract patterns, with a little help from his handler.

Ceramicist Helen Hill

Coastal artist Helen Hill fires her enormous clay animals in an electric kiln, then places them on iron grates over a large pit. A blazing fire is set beneath them to bring the finishing touch to the sculptures. We'll see how her creatures are a way to connect to the natural world.
