The music created by the Portland-based Al Andalus Ensemble explores the confluence of East and West cultures. Moroccan-born Tarik Banzi, with wife Denver-born Julia, both internationally trained musicians, soulfully merge classical, jazz and contemporary music with musical traditions from the Middle East, North Africa and Europe. From their music and Tarik’s paintings emerges the story of a time when Jewish, Christian, and Muslim people lived together in peace and harmony.
