The Poetry Society of America launched Poetry in Motion in 1992. The first poems appeared in the New York city subway. Now ten million commuters a day in cities all across the country can read poetry while riding mass transit. TriMet participates in this program as a wonderful way to enrich the riding experience of customers. About 9 years ago Trimet was approached by Poetry Society of America to participate. Trimet was honored to be the first west coast city invited. Five Oregon poets' poems were chosen as part of the local Poetry in Motion project. Instead of advertising, little gems of words are placed just above eye level. Of all the Literary Arts programs, Poetry in Motion is by far the most visible.
