- Don MacLane holds BA and MFA degrees in Sculpture from Antioch College and the University of Oregon. Over time, he acquired skills that he uses in his sculpture. He trained as a cabinetmaker making custom hardwood furniture, learned blacksmithing and reconstructed timber frame barns. For years his day job was as a steel fabricator working on structural steel, cranes, machinery and pressure vessels. He went back to school and eventually received a degree in mechanical engineering. The technical training helps him understand the behavior of his kinetic sculpture and the experimental musical instruments that he builds. He took advantage of an early retirement offer and at last is able to work full time on sculpture.
