Rachel Johnson grew up in the tiny eastern town of Vale, Oregon, and is now the town’s only clog dancing instructor. After developing an interest in the traditional Appalachian dance form in college, she returned home to teach. Her students range from small children to adults. The dancing is based on a shuffle step, and makes a lot of noise because the dancers wear loose taps on their shoes and stomp in time to bluegrass music.
