Dating to the early 1800s, shape note singing is a uniquely American musical tradition bringing communities together through four-part harmonies—in turn boisterous and reverent, but always soul-stirring. Locally, Portland Sacred Harp preserves this cultural heritage through its regular “singings” and Sacred Harp conventions, to which people with or without musical experience are equally invited to participate.
