- The mudflats of the Willapa Bay Wildlife Refuge in SW Washington bay are a beautiful feeding ground for shorebirds. But in recent decades, spartina, an invasive grass from the east coast, has established itself in the bay, damaging the feeding grounds and threatening the ecosystem. Land managers have adopted an aggressive and controversial eradication program, using powerful herbicides to restore the bay's habitat.
