Field Journal: Awkward Moments
Monday, September 24, 2007 — I certainly have plenty of awkward moments. Now I’d like to share some of our videographer’s awkward times.
The only difference is, these are intentional. These guys get themselves into the strangest poses all in order to get great video.
Todd Sonflieth never shot an interview before from atop a ladder. In fact our fossil scientist, Bill Orr, was at the top of a ladder too. We all climbed up so we'd be able to talk about a pteranodon model hanging from a ceiling.
Michael Bendixen loves to get wet. It helps that he has a special waterproof housing for the one camera.
Still, sometimes the full featured camera works best, even if you're knee deep in a lake.
Todd Sonflieth gets wet the old fashioned way. Waders protect his legs. An "aquarium box" with plexiglass on one end shields the full sized camera for a partially-submerged angle.
Tom Shrider flattens himself against the roots of a tree to watch arachnologist Greta Binford probing the soil for a tiny, two-millimeter, distant relative of the brown recluse.
Nick Fisher waits in a ditch for nearly 30 minutes waiting for a cyclist to ride through his perfectly framed shot with ferns in the foreground.
