The rugged, but vulnerable Obsidian Trail in the heart of the Three Sisters Wilderness Area is in danger from both over use and climate change. Born from volcanic upheaval this wilderness may look impregnable, but its soils and vegetation are fragile. The Forest Service has restricted its use over the past fifteen years which has helped to limit the impact from hikers and campers. But Collier Glacier's rapid retreat is cause for concern.
