In 1996 the pronghorn were in trouble at Hart Mountain Antelope Refuge. Biologists estimated that coyotes were killing 80% of fawns and a plan to kill the coyotes was considered. Instead, livestock were removed from the refuge, allowing meadows and streamside vegetation to improve the forage for pronghorn. More favorable weather has also allowed the pronghorn to flourish. Now there are more than ever - some 2,400 - on the 280,000-acre refuge.
