Portland Kids Win Big With Soccer Poems

May 04, 2006

-w200_IMG_5908.jpgIt's not too often that Amercian schools win international competitions. Or win all expense paid trips to Europe. But that's just what happened to the 4th, 5th, and 6th graders at the German American School of Portland. Their German poems about soccer propelled them into the group of 100 winning schools -- out of more than 12,000 from around the world. Allison Frost spoke with Blake Peters, who runs the school. He said they've never won anything quite as big the "World Cup in School" contest.

This a wunderbar achievement!
It shows how excellent an international bilingual education can be!
In this case it is German-American language and cultural immersion.
It takes a lot to write a good poem in another language.
Students of German American School Portland in Beaverton have it all.
May the school prosper so that many more American students get this extraordinary opportunity. What a gateway for life!

I am happy to hear the kids of German American School Portland have won the trip to the soccer world championship in Germany.
They really earn it.
I have visited the school several times and can tell everybody:

This school is awesome.

I wouldn't hesitate a second to enroll my kids there!

First class international bilingual education.

I wonder why the Portland community is not better informed about these kind of quality schools by our media?

Therefore many thanks to Oregon Public Broadcasting.

We enjoyed reading about this wonderful program, and then hearing the interview with two of the young people. It was delightful hearing them read their poems. Being a quilter, Barbara particularly enjoyed seeing the quilt and the charming way of sharing the poems.

We know the proud grandmother of one of the young poetic quilters. Cheers!
