The Farm and the Making of Oregon
Write
a series of diary entries about farming life in Oregon 100 years
ago, 50 years ago, and today, to show how farming and farm family
life have changed over the years.
Research
the Homestead Acts and their effects on farming in Oregon. Without
this legislation, how do you think Oregon would be different?
Celebrate
the tradition of farming in Oregon by visiting a farm or attending
a threshing bee, harvest festival, farmers' market, state or county
fair. If available, get involved in a 4-H program.
Research
and prepare a local history of a community that is dependent on
farming for its livelihood today. Include industries that are
"adjunct" to farming (e.g. transportation, mills, canneries,
farm products, production, and the development of markets.)
Create
a brochure that explains the history of a farming in your area.
Develop
a series of maps of the area defined as Oregon today, from the
time prior to European settlement to the present. Include the
locations of farm land, specific crops grown, animals raised,
transportation routes, and major cities and towns.
Select
an Oregon farm or dairy product. Research and prepare a visual
to show how the original product is processed into other products
and where these are ultimately sold in the world.
Trace
the role of migrant farm workers in Oregon farming history. What
challenges do migrant farm workers face in Oregon?
