Farming Activities and Management

Build a 3-dimensional model of a working farm, showing the variety of activities which take place during the year.

Investigate the types and purposes of farming equipment such as the combine harvester and the reaper-binder and find out how they have improved harvesting over the years. Draw diagrams to demonstrate how the equipment works.

Role-play a dialogue between yourself and another person, one of you taking the role of a person living in the city and one on a farm. Discuss the similarities and differences in your lives by considering typical activities, pace of life, amount of time spent outdoors, viewscape, common sounds, concerns and values, use of technology, and recreational opportunities. What would each of you miss if you were to exchange places with one another?

Write a fictional account that portrays how the physical characteristics of a place affect farming activities there. Explain the limitations imposed (e.g. climate, availability of water, steep slopes, soil conditions), and how they have affected farming practices in different regions of Oregon. Consider how farming and dairy practices have also affected the culture of farming , as well as the resource itself.

Investigate the role of finance and loans in the operation of a farm. How do financial conditions around the world affect Oregon farming?

Research the history of federal price supports. What are the advantages and disadvantages of these practices?

Visit a farm, cannery, or food processing plant, dairy, farmers' market, Christmas tree farm, state or county fair, OSU Agricultural Experiment Station Field Day or Agricultural Festival and prepare a written and visual report on the activities you experience there
