Synopsis of video: The Oregon Story: Farming deals with the many issues facing two farming families in Oregon: a dairy farmer in the Willamette Valley and an Eastern Oregon wheat farmer from Echo. The past, present and future of farming in Oregon are explored.

Make a list of the agricultural products you and your classmates use in your everyday life. Visit a grocery store and interview the store manager to find out where these products come from. Ask whether the sources of these products have changed over the past 10 years. Chart the origins of the products on a map in the classroom.

Brainstorm how your life is related to farming in Oregon. Do you live on a farm or know someone who does? What Oregon products do you use? What other Oregon products are available in the supermarket? Are any of these products from local farms? Where in Oregon do you think these products were produced?

Describeyour view of a farmer, and the farming way of life.

Define the characteristics of land that is suitable for farming. Where are such lands located in Oregon? Review the rainshadow effect on Oregon’s climate east of the Cascades.

2 Sensitive and young viewers may need preparation for scenes showing the birth of a calf and artificial insemination of a cow.
