Adapt the following extensions or create new ones! Remember, the best extension by far is direct experience with Oregon's land and people!

Research the lives of those whose wealth and prominence derived from possessing and exploiting tracts of forest lands -- e.g., those who founded enterprises such as Weyerhaeuser. Write and stage a play about these activities and their role in defining the character of Oregon today.

Celebrate the tradition of logging in Oregon by participating in a local timber festival.5 Plant a tree.

Explore museums and exhibits that portray local histories of logging in Oregon6. Keep a list of I didn't know that statements about what's gleaned from the displays and artifacts.

Locate a community that is dependent on logging for its livelihood today. Prepare a local history of logging, and include industries that are adjunct to logging (e.g., transportation, lumber mills, forest products production, and the development of markets) in your account.

5 For example, participate in the World Championship Timber Carnival in Albany, Douglas County Timber Days at Sutherlin, the Columbia County Fiar, the Estacada Timber Festival, the Clatskanie Heritage Days and Logging Show, or the Loggers Breakfast at Collier State Park in Chiloquin.

6 Some museums are listed in the See It section of this guide. Also contact your local chamber of commerce.
