Investigate technological developments relevant to forestry, e.g., the chainsaw, the whole-log barker, and the Kraft process for pulp production. Prepare a report on the ways in which they have transformed the logging industry and the impact of logging on the land.

Prepare a set of questions and use them to interview a logger about changes that have occurred in his/her work and relationship to the land. Write an article about this person and submit it to a local magazine or newspaper.

Trace logging activities from New England to the Midwest to the Pacific Northwest. Describe the impacts on settlement patterns (e.g., in western Oregon, the eastern margins of the Cascades, and the Blue Mountains).

Describe how Oregon towns have adjusted to contemporary changes in the forest industry.

Critique the use of the word harvest when applied to cutting managed plantations and old growth.

Write a report about recently developed wood products and wood substitutes.

Present a slide program on the future of forestry in Oregon. Provide support for your position(s).
