Review the 100-year history of the Shaver Barge and Transportation Company and how it adapted to changes in river conditions, settlement patterns and shifts in markets.

Investigate technological developments relevant to ports and trade. Prepare a report on the ways in which they have impacted and transformed ports in Oregon.

Develop and present a slide program that details what you think the future of international trade will be for Oregon in the future. Provide support for your position.

Compare the operation and development of ports in Oregon with those in other parts of the world.

Anne McIntyre on being a river pilot

Interview a river pilot or longshoreman about changes that have occurred in his/her work and relationship to the resource. Write an article about this person and submit it to a local magazine or newspaper.

Describe how port towns such as Gardiner, Florence, and Astoria adjusted to changes in industries. What role did diversification play in their ability to respond to changes in Oregon’s resource base?
