Preview
the program for specific information and concepts relevant
to your goals and materials and to current events. Adapt the following
suggestions for previewing activities, or create your own activities.
What
do Nike tennis shoes, a Sony radio, Barbie dolls and Beanie Babies
have in common? They all made their way to US consumers on cargo
ships that arrive in ports. Brainstorm how your life is affected
by ports specifically and trade in general. Examine some products
which you own or are wearing to find out where they were made.
How do you think these products got to Oregon? Do you live near
a port or know someone who does? How do Oregon products that are
made near where you live get transported to where they are sold
or used?
Use
a road map of Oregon to locate places discussed in the video program.
These places include: the Columbia River, Boardman, Umatilla,
Morrow, I-84, I-5, Umpqua River, Portland, St. Helens, Columbia
City, Oregon City, Astoria, The Dalles, Willamette River, Bonneville,
Florence, Coos Bay, Hood River, and the Pacific Ocean. Are any
of these places located near you?
Brainstorm
a list of careers which are related to trade. Use the Internet
or arrange for representatives of these careers to speak to the
class about their career preparation and role in trade.
Look
at a map of Oregon and locate the major water, land (road and
railroad) and air transportation routes. Define the characteristics
of land and water that are suitable for transportation. Where
are they located in Oregon?
List
the top 10 countries to which Oregon exports goods and the top
10 countries from which Oregon imports goods. Make a map to show
these trading partners. Identify the characteristics of these
countries which make them good trading partners for us.
Select
a product such as coffee, bananas, electronics, Beanie Babies,
or athletic shoes, and develop a flow-chart to show where the
product is produced and how it travels to a store near you.
