Articulate your views on the use and management of public lands for grazing. What kinds of practices do you support? What kinds of limits do you believe to be necessary? Write a letter expressing your views and your justification for them to your legislator.

Obtain literature about ranching activities in Oregon from a variety of sources, e.g., the USDA Forest Service, the USDI Bureau of Land Management, and the Cattlemens Association. Identify how the different groups present their viewpoints, analyze the effectiveness of their presentations.

Evaluate techniques and approaches to restoration (e.g., light grazing, removal of grazers, plantings). What kinds of information would you seek to help you determine which approach is appropriate for a given situation?

Develop a map of your watershed and plot the location so fmajor land use activities. Find out how these activities are managed. Define their potential environmental impacts, aw well as steps that are being, or can be, taken to mitigate the impacts.

Consider the option of certifying beef, mutton, leather, and wool derived from animals raised on ranches that operate on a sustainable basis. Develop and conduct a survey as to whether or not this is a viable option for marketing.

Rewrite the Oregon story of ranching. Consider how things might have been done so that most of the ranges today are in good-excellent condition, so that most of the practices used are consistently sustainable. Create a flow chart that illustrates these differences, and describe the implications for Oregon today.
