Adapt the following suggestions for emphasis while viewing the program, or create your own activities, suggestions, and areas of focus. Remember to stop or pause, back up and review, and take time to replay the video to enhance the viewing experience.

Discuss the many ways tourism has been intertwined with Oregon’s history. Describe what you foresee as the future of tourism in Oregon.

Review the role of European settlement and transportation in the early phases of tourism in Oregon.

Discuss the different terms used to describe the new focus of tourism in Oregon: eco-tourism, adventure tourism, nature-based tourism, and sustainable nature-based tourism. Do these terms accurately describe the industry?

Focus on values that can be learned from the lifestyle of someone involved in sustainable nature-based tourism. Consider, for example, care of the land, the appreciation of nature, hard work, risks taken, entrepreneurial spirit, and patience. What particular values do you want to enhance in your life and why?

Martha Honey's quote "More tourists mean more impact on the environment"

Discuss the following statement from the video and the issues it raises: "What it amounts to is selling a fragile concoction of history, mythology, geology, botany, beauty and fun. But can they make such a thing pay? And can they sell unspoiled nature without spoiling it?"

Brainstorm ways in which you would go about developing an eco-tourism industry. If possible, contact a marketing expert or do research on marketing, and develop a marketing plan for your idea.

Bob Harvey's quote "Curry County is bigger than 1,000,000 acres and has no economy"

Make a chart showing the geological history of Oregon. How does the region's geology affect tourism in Oregon today?

Discuss changes in the responses Oregon's Indians had to the coming of European settlers. How did this reflect differences in values toward resources?

Find evidence in the video about the cause and effect relationship of tourism on the development of Bend. How did tourism serve as a catalyst for Bend's growth? Do you agree with the statement that Bend's development was "shortsighted?" Why or why not?

In what ways do you agree or disagree that the High Desert Museum is "a sort of conscience" at the heart of tourism in Bend?

The video discusses the Indian spirit trickster, Coyote, and wonders whether he had a hand in bringing Oregon’s history full circle, so that again Indians can play the part of hosts to outsiders in the field of eco-tourism. Write a story about Coyote and his possible role in eco-tourism in Oregon.
