Hay Raking Teams – Circa 1900

Collective Farming

Back in the era of horse-drawn plows, the farmers around Union would work together to tackle really big jobs, like barn-raising. Shared labor also helped to ensure that crops were harvested and stored before bad weather arrived. By sharing equipment, individual farmers could avoid a major investment in machinery that lay idle for much of the year. In 2005, Union County harvested over 100,000 acres.
