May 6, 2005 — Restoring Fire-Prone Forests
With summer approaching, we're on the brink of another wildfire season in the west.
Compounded by drought, pathogens, and contrasting management goals, the great western forests of North America face deteriorating conditions.
This week, we talk to two forest researchers about how they think these forests can be restored.
Their book and research prescribes an ecological approach that attempts to establish forests where fire serves a beneficial -- rather than destructive -- role.
Host: Christy George
Producer: Pete Springer
Guest: Stephen Arno, retired forest researcher with USDA Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station; Carl Fiedler, silviculture and forest researcher, University of Montana.
