June 24, 2005 — Portland's Creative Class

part one part two

Portland is a city where creative endeavors are a dime a dozen. There are the art galleries and First and Last Thursday, of course, but also bands, theatre, and films playing all over the city. Chefs cook up fancy meals at tiny cafes while poets pour their hearts out in coffee shops. Boutiques feature local clothing lines and there are plenty of graphic designers for hire as well.

Combined together with other talented workers -- writers, engineers, architects, researchers and more -- these people make up the 'creative class' in Portland.

This week, you'll hear from up-and-coming creatives -- as well as people well-established in the creative class. We'll discuss why Portland is trying to attract and keep creatives, and what creatives add to the city.

Host: Allison Frost

Guest: Joe Cortright, economist with Impresa and author of "The Young and the Restless: How Portland Competes for Talent"; Anne Mangan, marketing coordinator and creative services liason with the Portland Development Commission; and Don Rood, a designer with The Felt Hat, a firm working on the 'Experience Design Project' at the Portland Armory Theatre in the Pearl District.
