part one part two

Herbert Hoover lived in Newberg, Oregon for four years (1885-1889) as a boy. Scholars say his time in Oregon, and later in California, made a huge impact on the policies and ideas of the future president.

This week we explore how Hoover's time in the west shaped both his public and private life. As the first president from the west, Hoover brought a 'rugged individualist' outlook to the White House -- an outlook that many say shaped his policies during the Great Depression.

Host: Christy George, OPB News

Guest: Elena Danielson, director of the Hoover Institution Library and Archives, Stanford University; Mark Hatfield, former U.S. Senator, former Oregon governor, and current Herbert Hoover scholar.
