September 2, 2005 — Tax Breaks & Incentives
Traditionally, Labor Day was a holiday set aside to celebrate the accomplishments -- and contributions -- of the American worker. But with recent economic concerns over lay-offs and pensions and outsourcing, some American workers argue that they're not getting enough of a break, while big business and corporations get too much of one.
Faced with the reality of a global economy these days, how do states like Oregon remain competitive business environments in both a national and global economy? How does this competitive environment impact workers in Oregon?
Today, we take on the question of tax and other financial breaks given to corporations in the interest of economic development -- and explore just how effective these tax breaks are in Oregon.
Host: Mitchell Hartman, editor of Oregon Business Magazine
Guest: Greg LeRoy, author of 'The Great American Jobs Scam: Corporate Tax Dodging and the Myth of Job Creation'; and State Senator Ryan Deckert (D- Beaverton).
