For the last forty years, civic engagement and involvement in civic groups has been on the decline in the U.S. But in Oregon, the opposite has been true. Between 1960 and 1999, civic institutions in Oregon actually grew.

This week, we explore this growth of citizen activism, volunteerism, and civic engagement. We also take a look at the future of civic engagement both here and in the nation.

Host: Christy George

Guest: Robert Putnam, professor, Harvard University, also author of "Bowling Alone" and "Better Together"; and Steven Reed Johnson, professor, Urban Studies and Planning, Portland State University.
